Maria became a member of the SGI-USA in 1983, her first year in graduate school at the University of Denver. Her brother Jose Guajardo, who was then practicing in San Francisco, introduced her to the practice. Following her graduation from Harvard University, Maria received her Ph.D. from the University of Denver. She currently serves as Executive Director of Assets for Colorado Youth, a $10 million statewide initiative focusing on children and families. Author of The Spirit of Culture (2000) and The Spirit of Culture (2002), she is sought out nationally and internationally as a speaker and trainer. She serves on the Board of Trustees for both the University of Denver and Soka University of America. Her Buddhist practice has been interwoven throughout her professional career. Her life's work is shaped by the question, What role do children have in designing world peace?" In February 2002 she will be a featured speaker in Costa Rica, addressing the role of education in children's lives. She lives in Denver with her husband Ed and two sons Matt and Santiago.
