Biographical / Historical

History of the SUA student newspaper: In the second semester of SUA’s Aliso Viejo campus history, a student newspaper group was created as "a contributor to and an indicator of what this place [SUA] is, who all these people are, and what it means to be here." The inaugural issue of El Coyote was printed February, 2002. Wula Dawson, managing editor of the SUA’s school newspaper traveled to Los Angeles to attend the late journalist Daniel Pearl's memorial service and asked his widow Mariane if SUA's paper could take on the name of her husband to continue his legacy. Therein after, the SUA student newspaper has been entitled The Pearl. Mission of The Pearl: The Pearl strives to emulate slain Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl's efforts to bring out the human side of every story. Following his courageous model, The Pearl opens channels of communication in an endeavor to articulately and respectfully express differing opinions. The contributors to The Pearlreport on issues of concern for the campus, the local community, and the globe, aiming to unify the campus toward the realization of the mission of Soka University of America.
